Chico Buarque, the pen name of Francisco Buarque de Holanda (Rio de Janeiro, June 19, 1944), is a Brazilian musician, playwright and writer. The son of historian Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, he began his career in the 60’s, standing out in 1966, when he won, with the song “A Banda” (The Band), the Festival of Popular Brazilian Music. In 1969, with the growing repression of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil, he exiled himself in Italy, and became, upon his return, one of the most active artists in political criticisms and the fight for democratization in Brazil. In his literary career, he won the Jabuti Award, for the book Budapest, launched in 2004.
